The Binet hotel was the hub of activity in Mayo.

What Joe Ladue was to Dawson City, Joseph Eugène Binet was to Mayo. A successful miner and businessman in the Klondike, Binet started investing in the Mayo area as early as 1900. By the time silver was discovered in the area in 1918, Binet had staked and bought most of the land that became the town of Mayo. Binet built the Chateau Mayo hotel that would be the heart of the thriving silver centre and a Mayo landmark until 1986. Binet also brought a touch of French culture to Mayo.

Alex Nicol était un des premiers chercheurs d’or en 1898. Il s’établit peu après dans la vallée Stewart et s’affaira dans la prospection, le transport de matériel d’exploitation minière et démarqua les premières concessions minières de Keno Hill. Il participa au développement de la communauté à Mayo Landing. Les pique-niques à son domicile étaient très courus l’été.

Alex Nicol was one of the original stampeders in 1898. He settled soon after in the Stewart Valley, prospecting, freighting mining supplies, and staking early claims at Keno Hill. He helped to build the new community at Mayo Landing and summer picnics at his home were a staple of social life.
