Peu importe de quel côté
de l’océan Atlantique ils viennent, les francophones
ont toujours reconnu et apprécié vivement la valeur
d’une vie liée à la terre. Le Yukon interpelle
l’esprit féru d’individualisme.
Au cours du siècle dernier, l’isolation
et l’absence d’une infrastructure appropriée
ont entraîné la quasi-assimilation de la population
francophone par la population anglophone, plus importante.
Charles Turgeon arriva dans la région de
Mayo en 1908, en prospectant sur la rivière McQuesten.
Il épousa en 1912 une femme tutchone du Nord du nom de
Maisie et apprit sa langue. Ils avaient un très beau jardin
sur leur terre au bord de la rivière Stewart. Leurs descendants
vivent encore dans la région.
Charley Turgeon came to the Mayo area in 1908, prospecting
on the McQuesten River. He married a Northern Tutchone woman named
Maisie in 1912 and learned to speak her language; they had a beautiful
garden at their acreage on the Stewart River. Their descendents
live in the area to this day.

Whether they hail from one
side of the Atlantic Ocean or the other, French people have always been quick to recognize and enjoy the values of a life connected to the land. The Yukon speaks to the individual spirit.

Over the last century, isolation and the lack of a proper infrastructure led to the all but complete assimilation of French speakers into the larger English-speaking population.
Bill Couture, dernier résident de Fortymile
et prospecteur, bûcheron et trappeur. Vivant seul depuis plusieurs années, il rédigea un appel au secours sur un morceau de papier et l’expédia sur un radeau improvisé. Il mourut
quelques semaines plus tard à l’âge de 65 ans à
l’hôpital de Dawson.
Bill Couture, the last resident of Fortymile, a
prospector, woodcutter and trapper. Alone for many years, he scribbled a call for help on a piece of paper and sent it on a makeshift raft. He died a few weeks later at the age of 65 in a Dawson City hospital.
